It is with pride and satisfaction that I would like to address with all of you the astonishing progress in our municipality’s road infrastructure development.
Further I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the news outlet Gorkhapatra Daily for their recent comprehensive coverage regarding our progress in the municipal road infrastructure development, which has brought national and international attention to our development.
Under our vision for sustainable and inclusive development, we have ensured that each ward is connected by an “all weather” with the primary intent of connecting each ward to the municipal center year around, are now in the blacktopping phase which goes on to show our unwavering commitment to modernization and improved public service delivery.
As for the metrics, 333 local roads are currently under operation in the municipality out of which 13.5 kilometers of the total road length are blacktopped, 83.08 kilometers are graveled, and 668.93 kilometers are earthed.
As per our Municipality Transportation Master Plan (MTMP), these roads have been systematically classified into A, B, C and D categories for effective planning and implementation.
It is an immense pride for us to successfully and strategically integrate our road networks within the Strategic Road Network (SRN) framework. Several key routes such as the Mechi Highway, Fikkal–Pashupatinagar, and Chipitar–Antu have seen substantial progress, with 48.20 kilometers blacktopped, 2.45 kilometers graveled, and 2.41 kilometers remaining earthen.
Furthermore, under the District Road Core Network (DRCN), we have completed 10.83 kilometers of blacktopping, 16.12 kilometers of gravelling, and 36.56 kilometers of earthen roads.
Our MTMP prepared a few years ago with the vision on comprehensive connectivity envisions the upcoming 28-year timeline, with year-round access for all types of vehicles. So far, we are well on track, with upgrades being carried out on 13.5 kilometers of blacktopped, 83.08 kilometers of graveled, and over 668 kilometers of earthen roads.
The Municipality has always focused on bringing about tangible improvements in the quality of life of our citizens for which a well-planned road infrastructure is at the heart of this vision. As I have often stated: Had we relied on traditional construction methods, it would have taken us 28 years to merely gravel our roads. Instead, with a strategic and modern approach, we are witnessing real, measurable impact in the present.
The “One Ward, One Graveled Road” initiative, launched following the local elections, has reached a new milestone — with all 14 wards now seeing progress in blacktopping. This has been possible due to the relentless efforts of our engineers and civil staff, and the trust and cooperation of you, the people.
As per our projections to complete road gravelling across Suryodaya Municipality within 27 years, the municipality would need to allocate NPR 590 million every five years. This includes 5% for environmental preservation, 5% for surveys and design, 15% for road widening, and 75% for gravelling. At current rates, we estimate a total cost of NPR 3.2 billion for gravelling all roads in our jurisdiction.
