Agreement between NAST and the Municipality : A New Era for Nepali Tea

The Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and Suryodaya Municipality have teamed up to work on research and development at the new Tea Tasting, Promotion, and Research Center in Kanyam. This collaboration, formalized on January 9th, 2025, will focus on tea production research and testing for the next two years.

The signing ceremony for the agreement, held on the premises of the Suryodaya Municipality administrative building, was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of NAST, Mr. Dilip Subba, the Secretary of NAST, and several other high-ranking officials from both signatory institutions. The agreement was officially signed by Vice-Chancellor Dilip Subba and the Mayor of the municipality Ran Bahadur Rai. This collaboration marks a significant advancement in promoting tea research and development in the region and is poised to lead to improvements in tea production techniques and quality.

The freshly inaugurated Tea Testing, Promotion, and Research Center, inaugurated on the 27th of Mangshir by the Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Hon. Hikmat Kumar Karki, in the presence of other ministers and dignitaries, is a state-of-the-art facility. This center, funded by a substantial investment of 23 crores from Koshi Province, is the first and only of its kind in Nepal.

Through the signing of the research agreement with NAST, we are now jointly committed to addressing the challenges of quality improvement and promotion of Nepali tea, which has a rich cultivation history of over 160 years, on the global stage. The collaboration between Suryodaya Municipality, the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Koshi provincial government, and the Tea and Coffee Development Board represents a significant step towards achieving our vision.
