NPR 1 Billion Drinking Water Project to transform Dry Zones on Suryodaya Municipality”

Suryodaya Municipality has taken a historic step forward in addressing the long-standing drinking water crisis in its dry regions by implementing two major projects. These initiatives were officially declared through the municipal executive body and approved by the municipal assembly, with a special focus on solving the acute water scarcity in Wards 4 and 5.

A committee was formed under the leadership of local representatives to tackle this issue. Based on the committee’s recommendation, the Shree Antu–Samalbung Drinking Water Project was officially declared a “dry zone” initiative by the municipal executive and the assembly. This laid the groundwork for a large-scale infrastructure development project now named the “Climate-Resilient Comprehensive Drinking Water Project.”

Project Success and Community Impact

We are proud to announce that this ambitious project has now been successfully completed. It has brought a lasting solution to the drinking water needs of the residents of Wards 4 and 5.

Previously, hotels and homestays had to rely on water tankers for their daily water supply. That challenging chapter has now come to an end. This project has contributed positively across multiple sectors—tourism, sanitation, household livelihoods, and climate resilience. Despite its scale and complexity, the project received significant institutional support, making it possible for Suryodaya Municipality to lead such a massive NPR 1 billion endeavor within a single municipality.

Gratitude for Support and Leadership

This success was made possible through the collaboration and unwavering support of many individuals and institutions:

  • Former Prime Ministers and Ministers of Nepal
  • The Secretary of the Ministry of Drinking Water, who was closely connected with our municipality
  • The District Water Supply Office, which dedicated months in Kathmandu to finalize financial and technical approvals

I recall a phone call from the District Chief of the Water Office, who mentioned, “Mayor sir, it’s been a long time since I visited the district. Please speak with the Chief District Officer on our behalf.” Such dedication from our institutional partners proved invaluable.

Community Commitment and Execution

While there were initial concerns about the construction contractor’s capabilities, the local residents proved to be fortunate. The consumer committee, led by Mr. Raju Bamjan, worked tirelessly and demonstrated exceptional coordination and leadership. Today, we are thrilled to see drinking water reaching every household taped true testament to community-driven development.

As Mayor, I take pride in the active coordination and leadership role played by our entire municipal team. I extend heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to Mr. Raju Bamjan and his team for their outstanding service.

Appreciation for Former Leaders and Teams

I would also like to recognize the former ward chairpersons—Mr. Madan Lamichhane and Mr. Prem Tamang—and their respective teams for their persistent efforts in getting this project recognized as a “dry zone” initiative. Their foresight and dedication were instrumental in shaping the project’s trajectory.

Furthermore, I extend best wishes and gratitude to the current ward chairs and their teams from Wards 4 and 5 for their ongoing support.

Acknowledging Institutional Partnerships

A special note of thanks goes to:

  • The Vice-Chairperson of Suryodaya Municipality
  • The Drinking Water Management Coordinator
  • The Federal Water Supply and Sewerage Management Project, Ilam
  • The Department of Drinking Water
  • The Ministry of Drinking Water

Their relentless efforts and collaboration have been key in making this project a success.

Next Steps: Kanyam–Panchakanya Project

With the successful completion of the Shree Antu–Samalbung Project, our next focus is completing the Kanyam–Panchakanya Drinking Water Project, which is also part of the NPR 1 billion initiative. I call upon all stakeholders to unite and expedite this remaining work to eliminate drinking water problems across our municipality.

Conclusion: Let’s Celebrate and Stay Inspired

Let us celebrate this incredible milestone and extend our congratulations once again to the entire team, Mr. Raju Bamjan, Mr. Ekaraj Ghimire (Secretary), Mr. Tek Thapa, and every individual involved.

Your dedication has set a new benchmark for community-led infrastructure development. May this success inspire us all to contribute even more toward the betterment of Suryodaya Municipality.
