Post-Disaster Management Efforts of Suryodaya Municipality on 25th Ashoj.

Following the heavy rainfall that occurred on the 18th and 19th of Ashoj, resulting in loss of life and extensive damage across Suryodaya Municipality, the following actions and works have been carried out as of 25th Ashoj (Saturday):

Decisions and Actions Taken

  1. A comprehensive report detailing the extent of damages, status of relief distribution, relief materials received from individuals, organizations, and donors, as well as all municipal-level disaster response and recovery activities, has been submitted to the Office of the Chief District Officer, Ilam.
  2. Information regarding the damages caused and the municipal response efforts has been communicated to the Hon. Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Kulman Ghising.
  3. Maintenance and restoration work to reopen roads that were obstructed due to the disaster, with necessary cost estimates prepared and works are being carried out accordingly.
  4. Collection of the necessary documents for the construction of temporary shelters for displaced households is underway through respective ward offices.
  5. Relief materials were distributed to nine affected households in Ward 4 which brings the total of relief support from the local level to 42 affected families. Additionally, eight tarpaulins have been provided to Ward No. 5.
  6. The municipal office, ward offices, and health institutions operating in Suryodaya Municipality remained operational in the weekends following the decision made of 24th of Ashoj for ongoing disaster response, relief distribution, and disaster management service delivery.
  7. Repair works for water supply across different areas of the municipality are being carried out through community labor contributions. Sections of Jil, Pandam and Bagbirey of Fikkal Drinking Water Project are undergoing repair. Similarly, reconstruction and maintenance works for Aitabare Water Supply Project are in progress.
  8. Following the decision by the municipal staffs, ward staffs and health staffs, Teachers, assistant teachers, and staff members of all community schools within the municipality have also decided to contribute an amount equivalent to one day’s salary from the month of Ashoj to the Municipality’s Disaster Management Fund.
  9. A temporary diversion route has been opened at the Maiyu River area to ensure connectivity between Suryodaya Municipality and Maijogmai Rural Municipality. Further Coordination with the Infrastructure Office, Ilam, is ongoing for the construction of a permanent infrastructure.
  10. Heavy machineries, equipments, and human resources are being mobilized regularly to reopen local roads within the municipality that were blocked by the disaster.
  11. Due to the disruption of drinking water services in sections of Fikkal and Barbotey, municipality has provided drinking water service through tankers to ensure immediate access for residents.
  12. Bhupal Aryal, the resident of Ward No. 8 has provided drinking water equivalent to NRs. 10,000 provided to support affected households.
  13. Municipal police, staff members, people’s representatives, and members of various local organizations continue to remain active and engaged in relief distribution, rescue operations, and overall disaster response activities.
