Following the heavy rainfall that occurred on the 18th and 19th of Ashoj, causing significant human and infrastructural losses across Suryodaya Municipality, the following works and activities were undertaken on the 26th of Ashoj as part of the continued post-disaster management and recovery efforts:
Decisions and Actions Taken
- A meeting of municipal staff was held under the chairpersonship of the Chief Administrative Officer. The meeting directed all sections to carry out assessments of disaster impacts within their respective sectors and prepare detailed reports accordingly.
- Ward Offices are collecting all the necessary documents required for the construction of temporary shelters for displaced households. The municipality has also referred to the Temporary Housing Construction Standards, 2081 to guide the management and distribution of essential materials required for temporary housing.
- A review had been conducted on the relief materials already distributed to the affected families which would ensure accuracy, statistical availability and would be crucial for identifying further remaining needs.
- Health-related risk assessments were initiated to prevent any possible disease outbreaks in the aftermath of the disaster. Questionnaires for disease surveillance were prepared and distributed for data collection across affected communities.
- Assessment of damage to livestock and agriculture has been completed, and necessary documentation for further support and recovery assistance is being processed.
- Further relief materials for effected families have been received from One for One campaign Jhapa in coordination with the District Disaster Management Committee, Jhapa.
- The municipality is coordinating with several donor agencies and organizations for the further continued supply of essential relief materials to the affected families.
- Sections of Shaurey danda, Bhalukhop and Jil of Fikkal Drinking Water Project which were damaged severely by the aftermath of heavy rainfall that occurred on the 18th and 19th of Ashoj have been successfully repaired through local labour contributions, while works in the sections of Pandam and Bagbirey are progressing rapidly through local labor contributions. Reconstruction works under the Aitabare Water Supply Project have reached their final stage.
- Letters have been sent to the Ministry of Drinking Water, Irrigation and Energy, Koshi Province; the Drinking Water and Sanitation Division Office, Jhapa; and the District Administration Office, Ilam, requesting coordination and necessary technical assistance for further reconstruction and repair of the Fikkal and Pashupatinagar Drinking Water Supply Projects.
- To reopen local roads that were blocked or disrupted due to the disaster, heavy machinery, equipment, and necessary human resource available in the Municipality have been mobilized as per the allocated estimates, and maintenance and clearance works are being carried out continuously.
- Harrow Hall Academy, a academic institution of ward 9 of Suryodya Municipality has provided drinking water support in areas of Fikkal and Barbotey to assist residents affected by the water supply disruption.
- Municipal police, staff members, people’s representatives, and members of various local organizations continue to actively engage in relief distribution, rescue, and disaster response operations across the municipality.
