UNDRR IISSM Training: Representing Suryodaya Municipality regarding the strengthening of Local Voices for Global Resilience

It has been a matter of immense pride and responsibility to represent Suryodaya Municipality as a Resource Person in the Joint Training of Trainers on Urban and Private Sector Resilience, co-organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction – Global Education and Training Institute (UNDRR GETI) and the International Institute of Security and Safety Management (IISSM). The event took place from 22nd to 25th April 2025 at the prestigious Constitution Club of India, New Delhi.

This was just not yet another training for mere engagement rather this representation had been the opportunity of high-level learning and networking for me personally. The sessions, attended by several delegates from various Indian states, including key officials from related departments, UNDRR-NOEA Chief, DG-NDMA, other distinguished dignitaries and Prominent private sector entities from across India, reflecting a rich diversity of entities for a common cause of collaboration towards disaster resilience.

Representing Suryodaya Municipality as the Resource Person, I contributed to this meet by sharing our contributions, experiences and practices regarding local disaster risk reduction. This platform allowed our municipality to be formally introduced and acknowledged on an international stage, fostering recognition and appreciation from peer municipalities and the decision-making bodies.

Day 2: Practical Learning in Action

On Day 2, we kickstarted the session with case studies into real-world DRR led by experts from UNDRR and Mr. Safi Rizvi from NDMA which helped set the tone for further day’s activities.

All of us then engaged in interactive group exercises utilizing the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities. These sessions were deeply collaborative, stimulating teamwork, strategic thinking, and actionable dialogue around urban resilience frameworks.

Furthermore, the presence of Dr. Manu Gupta from SEEDS, whose grassroots-level insights added depth and realism to our discussions.

The day had come to an end with the group presentations and a powerful debrief, where the commitment and clarity of each participant was seen.

Fostering relations built beyond this Event

It was not the content delivered which stood out, but the spirit of cooperation and shared commitment that radiated across the entire event. It was heartening to see the level of interest and curiosity shown by mayors and officials from all of the representing bodies, many of whom expressed a strong interest in visiting Suryodaya Municipality in the near future. Discussions also hinted at possibilities for hosting similar programs within Nepal, an idea I welcomed and presented the idea for the program to be hosted within our Municipality premises.

A Step Toward Resilient Futures

This training marks a significant milestone for Suryodaya Municipality in aligning with global urban resilience goals. We return from this event not only more informed but also inspired to implement the learnings locally. It is my firm belief that such collaborations can ignite a broader culture of preparedness and sustainability, both within and beyond our borders.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to UNDRR, IISSM, and all participants for making this experience truly enriching.
