As Suryodaya Municipality is accustomed to making history on national and international stages regarding the welfare and wellbeing of its citizens, the municipality has for another time demonstrated its commitment towards safeguarding the welfare of its citizens by launching the historic scheme of innovative tea crop insurance in ward 8 of suryodaya municipality, an effort that stands as Nepal’s inaugural experiment in this field.
Regarding the tea cultivation as the cash crop in Suryodaya Municipality
Suryodaya Municipality, situated in the heart of Ilam district, Nepal, is a picturesque hill region known for its breathtaking natural scenery and pleasant weather. The Municipality was formed in 2013 AD through the merger of Kanyam, Phikkal, Panchhakanya, Gorkhey, Pashupatinagar, Shree Antu, Samalbung, Laxmipur and ward 8 and 9 of Jogmai Village Development Councils (VDCs).
Situated in the Mahabharata range, Suryodaya municipality boasts a favourable climate on the quality tea cultivation, making it a prominent, high quality, pesticide free Orthodox tea-producing hub in Nepal.
With its scenic beauty, favorable climate, and focus on organic tea production, the municipality is poised to become a true tea paradise, contributing significantly to Nepal’s expanding tea industry while preserving its natural environment.

Through this scheme the municipality aims to safeguard its primary cash crop and to protect our valued residents involved in farming against the potential risks and unforeseen calamities that threaten any agricultural venture.
Our approach not only covers tea insurance but also extends to other agricultural products through a broader agricultural insurance program. Launched in the F/Y 2080/81, this campaign was designed to protect our valued farmers against the potential risks in agricultural ventures.
This campaign further highlights our broader strategy to promote sustainable agricultural practices, enhance risk mitigation, our beliefs in the power of preventive measures in nurturing a resilient and prosperous economy and uplift the livelihoods of our farmers.
Words of appreciation and moving forward
At the time of writing, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the ward committee of ward number 8 and the dedicated members of the Tea and Coffee Development Board for their roles and support along the way to make this scheme a reality. In addition, Suryodaya Municipality greatly acknowledges the generous support of the National Tea Factory, for providing free insurance coverage to 60 farming households.
After a considerable amount of time, effort and determination, the initiative has borne fruit for which over 100 tea farmers are now securely covered by this insurance program. Although we are still in the early stages of integrating organic tea production with insurance measures, the positive outcomes that have been anticipated and the outcomes that have already been achieved signal a promising path forward.
As the Mayor of the municipality, I pledge to continue advancing policies that coincide and helps with the vision that we’ve been dreaming for a long run i.e “Prosperity of Suryodaya Municipality, Organic Agriculture, Eco-Tourism, and Economic Equality”. Our forward-thinking approach will ensure that every farmer in Suryodaya Municipality not only secures a more stable future but also thrives in an environment where sustainable growth and modern practices go hand in hand. Together, we are forging a legacy of resilience, sustainability, and progress for our entire community.
